(Here is a copy of the video we showed at the Hall of Fame… video edited by Christian Moulding while I did the audio)
What a weekend for Bronco fans and just hockey fans in general in Swift Current. The Broncos held their annual Wellington West Alumni Golf Tournament at Elmwood on Friday and then inducted Joe Sakic into the Hall of Fame on Saturday. I had a blast at both events and it was great to see so many alumni and fans active and excited about it. There was a really positive vibe going on throughout the whole weekend.
There were 27 alumni at the golf tournament on Friday. From what I understand that was a big increase on recent years. I’m glad to see that. Those guys played such a huge part in building this franchise and keeping a connection to that is important for its continued strength in years to come.
I don’t want to talk about how the golf went on Friday because they put a whole team of us radio guys together. We had a team of five guys and managed an even par round in a texas scramble. That tells you how much talent we’ve got on the course. We still had a lot of fun though. It was overall a great day with the golf, dinner and party in the tent after. Well done to everyone involved with organizing it.
Saturday night was the “main event” with the Joe Sakic induction. Sakic couldn’t have been a nice and more accommodating guy. He signed every autograph, shook every hand and posed for every picture he could. As a member of the Hall of Fame committee I know he did everything we could have asked from him. From interviews to autographing merchandise and contributing to the event with a speech plus the Q&A, we can’t thank Joe enough for what he brought to the evening.
The elephant in the room was our issues with the sound system. People are quick to assign blame to one group or another for what happened. We all did our best at the time and both the city and committee will make sure it doesn’t happen again. The bottom line was that we tested it and it was fine in the afternoon, but we had major problems during the show. No one was more frustrated than we were while dealing with those issues. I still think the evening turned out to be a huge success.
The speeches were great from Sakic, to Mark Lamb and special guest speaker (Former Bronco broadcaster) John Enns. Ryan did his usual bang up job as MC. I felt the Q&A turned out to be a lot of fun and added some personality to the evening. The food was terrific. I know I had a great time.
It’s the first time I’ve been actively involved in a committee for an event like that. You want things to go perfect, but it was a lot of fun and rewarding to help in that process. Thanks to Carol Beyer, everyone on the committee and all the volunteers for making it an enjoyable experience. I look forward to doing it again if they will have me.
I think the Broncos have done an excellent job of developing events outside of just hockey games this year. The realize that there needs to be more to their operation than the product on game day and are finding ways to expand their reach. They’ve put together dances, the PBR and things like the Hall of Fame. The office is taking risks and creating new opportunities for the organization in the community.
I think that hard work will pay off over the long-term as it can help add another needed revenue stream. Plus it opens the door to a lot more big and interesting events for the southwest.
Anyway enough talking about that aspect of things… the focus of the weekend was rightly Joe Sakic. A lot of people got to meet their hero and Joe more than lived up to whatever expectation any of them would have had for him. No ego there just all class. Here is some audio from the night…

Thanks again to all the businesses and fans who supported the Wellington West Broncos Alumni Golf Tournament and the Hall of Fame Banquet. Without your support there would be no event and there would be no Broncos. Again I had a blast over the weekend and thanks to everyone for allowing me to be involved. I can’t wait for next year.
If you have any ideas for what you want to see please feel free to volunteer yourself to Carol. The committee could always use fresh ideas and more hands on deck. They Hockey Hounds could also always use more people involved in helping them out. They did a good job running the bar and have meant so much to the Broncos over the years. It’d be nice to get them some more help as well.
There is a TON of news I still haven’t added to the blog. Things have been busy lately my apologies. I’ll try to get that up shortly.
