In addition to the debut of new Bronco Jay Merkley, Swift Current also welcomes back G Eetu Laurikainen and D Brycen Martin back to their lineup tonight against the Red Deer Rebels.
Laurikainen spent the last month with Finland at the World Junior Championship. He played in two pre-tournament games and never got a chance to actually hit the ice in the tournament itself. I’m sure it was frustrating for him to sit on the bench and watch his country get eliminated from medal contention when he believed he could have helped, but either way I’m glad he got the experience of going.
Martin was among the stars of the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge as he put up 9 points in 5 games to lead all defencemen ins coring. Some observers from that tournament called him the best player on the ice during some of the games he played for Team Pacific. Bronco fans should be excited about what Martin will develop into over the next few years here.

With the addition of Jay Merkley and the returns of Laurikainen and Martin the Broncos should have a much deeper lineup today. I’m curious to see how Coach Lamb structures his lines and pairings today. I’m sure he’s happy to have a couple more options.
We’ll have the broadcast tonight on The Eagle 94.1 FM with The New Pioneer Co-op Home Centre Broncos Hockey at 6:30pm.
