Justin Paulic mad 37 saves as the Moose Jaw Warriors beat the Swift Current Broncos 2-1 on Wednesday night.
“Tough to take in,” said Broncos forward Chance Lund. “Definitely outshot them, but there’s stuff we’ve got to pick up in our game like hitting the net and our preparation before the game. We’ve just got to be ready for the start, we’ve got to come out stronger than we did.”
Brandon Potomak opened the scoring only 31 seconds into the game as the Warriors took advantage of some mistakes by the Broncos in their own end to take an early lead. Moose Jaw added to their advantage when rookie Brayden Point was left uncovered and converted on his 19th of the season to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead after the first period.
“We didn’t have a great start,” said Broncos Assistant Jamie Heward. “You spot a team like that a 2-0 lead and it’s sometimes easier for a team that’s struggling to battle and play defensive hockey than it is for them to maybe be down two goals and try to come back.”
“Our start wasn’t great but I thought the rest of the game we absolutely dominated and couldn’t put pucks in what seemed like open nets.”
The Broncos go on the board early in the second period when Lund converted after a long shift in the Warriors zone. That’s as close as Swift Current could get despite firing 38 shots compared to only 24 for the Warriors.
Eetu Laurikainen took the loss with 22 saves for Swift Current.
Both teams went 0 for 2 on the power play The Warriors now lead the season series 3-2.
The Broncos stayed tied with Medicine Hat for 6th in the Eastern Conference, 9 points up on 9th place Lethbridge.
Swift Current is in Moose Jaw on Thursday.
