Very nice road game from the Broncos in Regina last night. They didn’t create a ton of opportunities, but they really limited Regina’s high-end chances as well. Jon Groenheyde made the first save all night and really controlled his rebounds well. The Broncos D was strong, kept Regina to the outside and prevented the Pats from getting second and third chances.
It was a huge game for Taylor Vause as he celebrated a milestone (250 career games) with another performance that proves he’s one of the top forwards in this league. He scored the go-ahead goal and the eventual winner to move him up to 26 goals on the season. Vause also could have had his third hat trick of the season if not for just missing on a first period break.
I thought the turning point in this one was the Derko goal. The Broncos didn’t get off to a great start and were getting beat to a lot of pucks early. The Derko/Blanke/Dale line came out and had a great shift to create that goal. Derko’s quick release there was also a huge key. He’s got a great shot and hopefully we will see more of it. That line deserves credit for igniting the Broncos I think. They outplayed the Pats for the rest of the first period after that and it seemed to give them a spark.
This was the first road win in Regina since January of 2010. Nice to get that monkey off the back! Now the Broncos will try to keep it going as they search for their first win at the beautiful new Mosaic Place in Moose Jaw. It will be another tough game where the Broncos will need strong goaltending, good defence, a high battle level and opportunistic scoring. That’s what they got in Regina. We will see if they can put it together again tonight and pull closer to 8th place Brandon. Gaining some ground last night I’m sure felt good. Brandon is in Red Deer tonight so Swift Current needs a win to at least keep pace with either the 8th or 9th place team. It won’t be easy against Moose Jaw, but the Broncos have proven all season they can beat any team in this league when they are on their game.
