Weise Returns for WW Smith Alumni Classic, Poker Tournament Details

Dale Weise

We are only a few days away from the WW Smith Swift Current Bronco Alumni Golf Classic. I’ve already told you about the new direction the event is going. I’ve posted some thoughts on the event from former Broncos Todd Holt and Terry Friesen who are both going to be there this week. Over the next few days I’ll have some conversations with a few more of the guys coming back.

The 30ish alumni coming back to Swift Current for the event at Elmwood Golf and Country Club includes current NHLer Dale Weise. The gritty, two-way forward has played for both the New  York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks. He is a restricted free agent, received a qualifying offer from the Canucks and has now filed for arbitration. Depending on the result of the arbitration (or negotiations before the hearing) he could either be locked in as a Canuck or become an unrestricted free agent. Given that Vancouver qualified him it’s hard to imagine them not finding a way to bring a guy who brings exactly what they need to the table.

What is he thinking about his career? That’s part of the conversation I had with Weise (over two weeks ago) about coming back to Swift Current for the tournament, his NHL career so far and reflection on his junior years.

Weise is facing an interesting situation. He has proven at previous levels that he can do more than “grind it out” and wants a chance to show that. However, he has a chance to be part of a championship contender in Vancouver and is willing to do whatever it takes. Hopefully he gets the best of both worlds with the Canucks.

Vancouver wasn’t able to hang on to another former Bronco recently when Aaron Rome signed a free agent deal to join Cody Eakin and company in Dallas.  If the Canucks do end up reaching their potential it would be good to have a former Bronco be a part of that.

Weise joins the likes of Eakin, Holt, Friesen and many more in participating in the alumni classic this weekend. There is a round of golf for sponsors and alumni on Friday and the classic itself goes Saturday. We have a few fun things planned and hopefully everyone will have a great time.

Later this week I will have interviews up with a couple more guys who are going to be part of the event this year including a former Broncos Captain. Expect lots of audio from the weekend itself as well.

The Broncos and Elmwood are putting on a poker tournament in conjunction with the alumni weekend on Friday night. Fancy yourself a decent card player or at least enjoy giving it a shot? Check it out. It should be a fun crew.

Who couldn’t use an extra $1500?

Much moolah graces the palms of one Kurtis Bakanec

  • Who better to win some major cash from the Broncos Frontier Days 50/50 than a radio guy? Congrats to Kurtis Bakanec of the Country Music Radio afternoon show for scoring $6,505 in prize money. I wonder if he was buying a round or two this week? He’s an Oilers fan (like me) so you know he deserves some good luck…
  • The Broncos are getting season ticket holders off the bench. They’ve started a new referral program. Current 2012-13 season ticket holders will receive up to a $50 credit towards their 2013-14 season ticket for every new season ticket holder that they refer. Easy money and more fans in the stands is a win/win.

Final day of my holiday today… on the plane back to Swifty tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend!
