Friday’s recap is just bellow this post. Scroll down for more on Day 2 of on-ice sessions as well as interviews with Brycen Martin and Zack Gonek.
The most talked about player and position in the off season… new Broncos import goalie Eeru Laurikainen. Swift Current hasn’t had much success drafting European goaltenders in recent years. They struck out each of the last two times they tried including the much publicized troubles with Steffen Soberg last season. So why try again? Need and opportunity. The Broncos found themselves without a #1 goalie after the end of Jon Groenheyde WHL career and people Broncos Coach/GM Mark Lamb knows and trusts sold him on Laurikainen.
I got a chance to chat with the import from Finland at the start of training camp. His English is quite solid and I’m sure will only improve.

It’s always a risk when you draft anyone in the import draft. Will they come over? Are they going to be patient during the adjustment phase? Is their game going to translate successfully to the North American game? So far Laurikainen at least appears to have the right attitude about things. A big plus for him is that he accepted every interview request he has had so far… no red flags this time around! Laurikainen is his own man and should certainly be judged as such. I’m confident after talking with him and talking with management that he is committed to being here and is going to give it his all to succeed in Swift Current. Now we just have to wait and see how he performs when given the ball.
As for the battle for the second goaltending job in Swift Current, I’ll post interviews with Steven Myland and Landon Bow sometime over the next day or two. That one could come down to the wire.
Scroll down for a Day 2 recap and don’t forget scrimmages at 4pm and 6pm today. The Black vs. White game is at 1pm tomorrow.
