Promising rookie D Brycen Martin will suit up for Team Pacific at the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge this winter. It’s no surprise to see him make the squad given his pedigree and his level of play so far at the WHL level. the Broncos drafted Martin 2nd overall in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft and he has jumped right into a significant role on a blue line led by some older players. Despite that, Martin has still earned time on both special teams units and is being entrusted with a bigger and bigger share of the minutes as the season has progressed.

Broncos Coach/GM Mark Lamb wasn’t at all surprised about Martin’s inclusion on Team Pacific. He’s been very happy with the rookie’s play and has been pleasantly surprised by his ability to dot he little things in his own zone. They knew he could handle the puck and pass well, but he’s been even better at those “hard plays” than they anticipated.

I also chatted with Coach Lamb about Lowry and Black’s performance in Game 5 of the Subway Super Series, the two victories last weekend, their first full week of practice in a while and the weekend road swing to Alberta.
Lowry and Black are about 20 minutes away from Game 6 of the Subway Super Series with Lowry serving as captain for Team WHL tonight. The game is available on Rogers Sportsnet One and will determine the overall winner of the series. I know all Bronco fans are cheering them on.
