Here is my recap from Swift Current Online:

Jaedon Descheneau scored three times as the Kootenay Ice beat the Swift Current Broncos 5-2 on Monday afternoon. The win moved the once last-place Ice into a playoff position. Kootenay now sits 8th, a point ahead of Lethbridge in 9th and 2 points back of Swift Current in 7th.

“We weren’t good enough,” said Broncos Assistant Coach Darren Evjen. “Something usually we’re very good at every night is how hard we work, our battling… tonight it just seemed some of D and forwards just weren’t competing hard enough to win battles.”

The win moved the Ice to 19-5-1 in their last 25 games.

“We were just playing too easy,” Evjen said. “Letting the game come to us. We weren’t going to take the game. That’s when you don’t get loose pucks and you don’t win battles.”

Adam Lowry scored both goals for the Broncos. Each of his goals gave his team some momentary life before the Ice were able to snuff out that momentum.

The Ice got off to a fast start driving the net for quick goals in the first period by Levi Cable and Descheneau.

“That comes down to winning one on one battles,” Evjen added.

Swift Current got back to within a goal early in the second period on Lowry’s goal, but Zach McPhee’s goal on a scramble in front of the Swift Current net midway through the frame took away their momentum. Descheneau put the game out of reach with a third period power play goal after the Broncos missed a 2 on 1 shorthanded.

Lowry’s late goal gave the Broncos some additional life until Descheneau’s empty netter secured the 5-2 victory.

Both teams has 25 shots on goal as Mackenzie Skapski got the win for the Ice and Eetu Laurikainen took the loss for Swift Current. The Broncos went 0 for 2 on the power play, while Kootenay was 2 for 5.

The Broncos play a home and home with Medicine Hat starting Friday in Swift Current.
