Glenn Gawdin and Jake DeBrusk combined for 6 points as the rookies led the Swift Current Broncos to a 6-3 win over Edmonton in pre-season action on Saturday night.
Gawdin scored once and had 2 assists, while DeBrusk chipped in 3 assists and hit a post. Both were high scorers in midget last season and are hoping to make the jump to the WHL.
Coda Gordon, Bobby Zinkan and Jay Merkley each had a goal and an assist, and Graham Black helped out with 2 assists.
15-year-old Tyler Steengergen scored his first WHL pre-season goal 2:14 into the game to give Swift Current the early lead. They added to that with strikes from Merkely and Julius Honka before the end of the first period.
Edmonton came all the way back to tie the game with a couple goals from defencemen Cody Corbett and a single from Mitchell Walker.
Gawdin finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play from DeBrusk and Merkley for the eventual game winning goal midway through the second period. Gordon and Zinkan added third period insurance markers.
Zinkan battled Curtis Lazar in the game’s only fight.
Landon Bow made 33 saves to get the win in goal for the Broncos. Both teams went 1 for 6 on the power play.
The Broncos take on Calgary on Sunday at 3pm. It’s the first game between the two teams since the Htimen knocked the Broncos out of the playoffs in March.
