Colby Cave scored twice and had an assist as the Swift Current Broncos beat the Prince Albert Raiders 5-2 on Saturday night.

The win put the Broncos on top of both the East Division and the Eastern Conference.

Jay Merkley and Coda Gordon both had a goal and an assist for Swift Current. Gordon had seven points in three games this week, while Cave and Merkley both had six.

Dillon Heatherington added two third period assists.

Eetu Laurikainen made 28 saves to get the win including some big saves as the Raiders put some pressure on in the second period. Cole Cheveldave stopped 29 of the 34 Swift Current shots.

The Broncos came out on fire early with all sorts of pressure and high quality scoring chances.

Swift Current struck first when the Raiders turned the puck over to Coda Gordon and he started a give-and-go with Cave before finishing it for his fourth of the year. Cave then got one midway through the period with assists going to both Gordon and Connor Sanvido.

A late holding penalty to Julius Honka opened the door for the Raiders. They struck just as the penalty expired when Leon Draisaitl pounced on the rebound of MacKenzie Johnston’s shot. It was the first game for Johnston in his hometown since he was traded from Kelowna to Prince Albert.

The goal kept the Raiders in the game despite being outshot 16-4 in the first period.

Prince Albert turned the momentum around after a slow start in the second period and outshot the Broncos 17-9. Neither team found the back of the net and the game was still up for grabs in the third.

That’s when Cave struck again as he took a feed from Glenn Gawdin and drove the net on a goal that went off the Raiders defence before going by Cheveldave. It stood up as the winner.

A power play goal by Merkley and a beautiful even strength marker from Graham Black allowed the Broncos to pull away. Dakota Conroy added a late power play goal for Prince Albert.

You are definitely not utilizing your best player GRAHM BLACk!! After scoring in each of his first 3 games when he got back from camp, then he got 2 assists and first game star!! Now you stick him on a week line where he can’t preform! This guy has over come a serious illness but in spite of that managed to score 50 points each year he played. — now he is finally In top shape and you’re not giving him a chance! The paying public wants to see him play
……he cran’t score goals sitting on bench. GRAHM BLACK

Weak line? Merkley had 6 points in 3 games this week and DeBrusk had 3 points in 3 games. Black also plays on the top PP unit and has been out there on the PK too.

If he’s third in rotation sometimes it’s because the Broncos have very effectively been running a shutdown line of MacKay/LeSann/Johnson against the other team’s top line. That has opened up the opportunity for the Cave line and Black line to play against the other team’s 2nd and 3rd lines. That has helped them create more offence in the process.

Black has 8 points in 6 games I would hardly say he hasn’t been given the room to succeed.
