The Swift Current Broncos had three different two goal leads and couldn’t hang on in a 6-5 loss to Brandon on Friday night.

“They just kind of hung around and hung around the first two periods,” said Broncos Associate Coach Darren Evjen. “Then in the third we take those two penalties and they’ve got too good of a power play for you to put yourself in that situation.”

The win moved the Wheat Kings into a tie with the Broncos on top of the WHL East Division and only a single point ahead of the Regina Pats. It was Swift Current’s first regulation loss when they had a lead after 40 minutes.

The Broncos didn’t take long to open the scoring as a Julius Honka dump in deflected off Jordan Papirny and Nathan Burns pounced on he. He centered it to Jay Merkley who wristed in his 19th of the season only 1:26 into the game.
