The Swift Current Broncos continued to make a reputation as comeback kids on Tuesday with a 4-3 win over the two-time defending Eastern Conference Champion Edmonton Oil Kings.
Down 3-1 with 7:02 to go in the third period, Swift Current struck three times to beat the Oil Kings in regulation on Tuesday night.
“We were saying off air you said it doesn’t get any better than that,” Broncos Assistant Coach Jamie Heward told our Eagle 94.1 FM post-game show. “If it does I want to be around to see it. That was pretty impressive. You get down 3-1 to the best team in the East, a team that absolutely knows how to defend when they get a lead, that’s pretty impressive for us to do that.”
Jay Merkley and Nathan Burns each had a goal and an assist for the Broncos, while Jake DeBrusk had a two assist night.
“That was pretty incredible to see the boys comeback like that,” Merkley said. “That was a hard fought game and I think we deserved to get the win out of that one.”
Andrew Johnson and Colby Cave also scored for Swift Current as they took until the third period to find a way to beat Edmonton goaltender Tristan Jarry.
“We just tried to stay positive on the bench,” Merkley said. “We were getting lots of chances and lots of opportunities. Jarry was making some big saves. I think we just stuck with it. Near the end we made some line adjustments that ended up working out in our favour and eventually we found the back of the net.”
The Broncos have now won three in a row and have 11 of a possible 12 points in their last six games.
