In a tight defensive game it was the home team getting the edge in game 1 of the first round WHL playoff series between Medicine Hat and Swift Current.
Chad Butcher’s early third period goal stood up as the game winner as the Tigers topped the Broncos 2-1 on Friday night.
“I thought it was a real defensive game by both teams,” said Broncos Associate Coach Darren Evjen. “Both teams played well that way of not giving up a whole bunch. Even penalty killing both teams were very good.”
“It was must a tough battle. I really liked a lot of things we did tonight.”
Butcher made it 2-0 Tigers when Miles Koules won a battle and fought the puck to the Swift Current net. It bounced right to Butcher who had a wide open net.
Swift Current battled back with a Julius Honka power play goal a few minutes later, but that’s all the offence they could muster in a tight checking game.
“Good in our end and our puck plays were really good going out of our end,” Evjen said. “In the neutral zone we did a lot of good things. The biggest key is probably when we got to the offensive zone we needed to create more and win some more battles.”
