That was a tremendous weekend for the Broncos. Despite the setbacks of losing Jay Merkley to illness and Cole Johnson to injury again, those were perhaps the most complete back-to-back defensive efforts I’ve seen from this team in recent times. They played structured and smart hockey with a commitment to their team game. It was also a great weekend for Landon Bow who continues to establish himself among the better goaltenders in the league. He is having a coming out party and showing no signs of slipping with a huge workload.
Carter Rigby fit in quite well. He plays a hard style, was physical and moved the puck well. Once Merkley is back that top six looks dynamite. I also thought the bottom six looked better than it had all year this weekend. Steenbergen with Mackay and LeSann has worked tremendously. They’ve had lots of energy and won a lot of pucks. Meanwhile, Odgers looks a lot more comfortable at centre and is building a bit of chemistry with Schumacher I think.
Nikkel this weekend had his best games as a Bronco and is really starting to fit in. If was a great weekend for the whole defensive crew. Jaydan Gordon had a solid showing in a few shifts as the 7th D and it’s good to see him get out there and get involved.
Lots to like this weekend. I also really enjoyed calling a game with former Broncos Associate Coach Darren Evjen. He had some great insight and I hope his pee wee team has an awesome season.
