What a weekend for the Broncos bouncing back from a scoring slump that seemed like it would never end with an all-world performance by their captain in a 7-3 win over the Raiders. It was a tough game for PA but they had a good run down the stretch and if I were that organization I’d sure think long and hard about brining their coach and their GM back next season when they don’t lose much from the current roster. Could be a good club. They’ve made big strides.
From a Broncos perspective the wins this weekend may have been partially inspired by a little coaching trick. I don’t want to speak too far out of turn on this one but on Friday on the way to PA Coach Lamb instructed Dave the bus drive to take the main roads in Saskatoon instead of the grid road shortcut. At the time it struck me as odd because surely we’d end up getting to the rink late if we hit traffic… which we did. The bus pulled up to the Art Hauser Centre just after 5:30pm instead of our usual 5pm arrival. I thought it was strange at first and then it occured to me maybe this was accidentally unpurpouse. Arriving over half an hour later than usual gave the Broncos a lot less time to do pre-game meetings and analyze the game. Instead as Carter Rigby said in our post-game chat last night they just quickly got dressed/stretched and went out like when they were ten years old to play the game.
Maybe that’s what a club that had played well but was snakebitten and seemingly battling confidence needed. Less time to think and a night where they just went out and played the game they love.
I didn’t ask Coach Lamb is he did it intentionally because I have a pretty good idea anyway and why spoil the fun of speculating. To me it looks like a veteran move to help clear his team’s head that let them have fun again and led to a huge weekend that may have saved their season. Maybe not. You decide.
Ultimately though the credit for this weekend goes to the players who stepped up and delivered in a big way. They showed how much they cared and found their scoring tough again at a vital time. Now it’s on to Moose Jaw on Tuesday with chance to clinch a playoff spot with a win.
