Swift Current Broncos forward Jay Merkley is heading to school.

Merkley will fore-go his overage season in the WHL to attend the University of Lethbridge and play for their CIS hockey team.

The Calgary product put up 114 points in 164 games as a Bronco.

Swift Current picked him up in a deal with the Lethbridge Hurricanes for gritty forward Josh Derko and a second round bantam draft pick.

His departure still leaves the Broncos with eight potential overage players and only three spots to fill.

Merkley joins graduating Broncos forward Carter Rigby in committing to a CIS school this summer. Rigby will play for the University of Prince Edward Island.

While yes, it leaves eight bodies, they are for the most part just that. Lets assume that Penner and Foulk are already part of that group of players told they where not coming back in Lambs year end presser. Lets then prepare for the team not having its nhl signed 20s back (which is the overwhelmingly obvious conclusion). This leaves Bow, Mackay, LeSann and Nikkel. That isn’t a strong group.
Personally I would love to see both Lesann and Mackay off the roster prior to camp and let them find a place to play. SC is losing so much offense, they need some kind of contribution from their twenties in that regard, something neither of them are able to provide.
I would also like to see Bow moved (if there is a suitor for an OA netminder of course). This is nothing on Landon, I like him, I think he is a great tender and underrated in the league, but with the state of the team next year, I’d like to see Child given the ball to run with while they bring in one of those older back ups to push him.
This leaves Nikkel, who while I am not a fan personally, I can see his role to the team this year. With the other two spots, I don’t see a huge rush to fill them, but a couple of forwards capable to hold down top six roles would be nice.
