Brandon Baddock scored with 1:07 left in the third period as the Edmonton Oil Kings handed the struggling Swift Current Broncos a 2-1 loss on Saturday night.
The loss was Swift Current’s tenth in a row with seven of them decided by a single goal.
“The guys played a pretty good game tonight,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “To lose it that way is heartbreaking. We’ve lost so many like that in this streak. I don’t know how to explain the emotions. You’re angry, you’re disappointed… you’ve got one minute and lets face it you want to get it to overtime at that point. We didn’t get it there.”
“We got outworked, we got outbattled and we turned the puck over too much along the wall.”
Edmonton struck early on a first period power play when Tyler Robertson fired a wrist shot by Landon Bow’s glove.
Robertson’s 9th of the year brought down a barrage of stuffed animals as a part of Edmonton’s annual Teddy Bear Toss. They collected over 12,000 stuffed toys.
The Broncos will participate in four Teddy Bear Toss games this season including their own, the Oil Kings game, Sunday in Calgary and next Saturday in Cranbrook.
After a lengthy delay to clean the ice the Broncos responded when Tyler Adams scored his second goal of the season to tie the game up.
Tristen Elder had dumped the puck to the corner and it bounced in front for Adams who made no mistake. The assist was Elder’s first WHL point.
“We addressed our lack of (emotion and battle),” Smith said. “I thought we really responded after (the goal) we had a real chip on our shoulder. It was almost like we were ticked off and that’s how we have to play.”
