The Regina Pats came back from down 3-1 early in the third period to knock off the Swift Current Broncos 4-3 in the shootout this afternoon.

It was a heartbreaker for the Broncos who were half a period away from closing to within 7 points of the Pats for one of the final WHL Eastern Conference playoff spots.

“It was a heck of a hockey game,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “It was all it was billed up to be. Us trying to catch them and them trying to stay ahead of us… there was a real feel for that early and often. Both teams had opportunities, both teams were physical (and) it was a really good hockey game.”

Swift Current took a 3-1 lead after killing off a 5 on 3 penalty early in the third period when Jamal Watson struck shorthanded. It felt like they had all the momentum until a quick 3 on 2 goal from Sean Richards for Regina and a costly too many men penalty for the Broncos.

“The too many men penalty those just kill you in playoff style games,” Smith said. “That was a big turning point. They scored 15 seconds later and it was a tie game. Those two plays that led to goals, the bad rush read and the too many men, at this point in the season you can’t have that kind of stuff happening to you.”
